The Betty

Coach Hutter was appointed head women’s basketball coach at the University of North Dakota on March 24, 2025, following a successful season as the program’s associate head coach and a decorated 19-year tenure at Mayville State University.

At Mayville State, Hutter led the Comets to a school-record 314 wins, including seven 20+ win seasons. His teams posted 13 consecutive winning seasons, compiling a 258-102 record over that span. Under his leadership, the Comets claimed three North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) regular season championships and four conference tournament titles — including back-to-back crowns — with regular season championships in both 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Hutter earned NSAA Coach of the Year honors twice, in 2014 and 2019, after guiding the Comets to regular season titles. His 2013-14 squad went 25-4 overall and 14-1 at home, capturing the conference tournament title. That team averaged a high-octane 90.1 points per game, had four players scoring over 14.5 points per contest, and scored 100+ points in five games. Defensively, they were just as formidable, allowing only 64.4 points per game with opponents shooting just 34.9% from the field.

In his final season at Mayville State, Hutter’s team set a program record with 26 wins against just three losses and went undefeated (12-0) at home. They shared the regular season NSAA title with an 11-1 conference record and won the tournament title with a final victory over Dakota State, earning an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament. The Comets advanced to the Round of 16 for the second time under Hutter after winning both games in their opening pod.

That season, Mayville State ranked among the NAIA’s top offensive teams, averaging 79.1 points per game (22nd nationally). They also ranked in the top-10 in several key categories: three-pointers made per game (10.4), three-point percentage (.363), free throws made per game (16.8), and free throw percentage (80.8).

Before his time at Mayville State, Hutter spent three seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State, where he helped lead the Mustangs to an NSIC championship and coached five all-conference players, one all-region selection, and one All-American.

Hutter began his coaching career at Centennial High School in Blaine, Minnesota. During his four-year stint as head coach, he guided the girls’ basketball team to back-to-back conference championships and posted a 64-28 overall record.
